Questions parents ask

Who is the Kids' Learning Hub for?

Children aged 5 to 12 who love axolotls or are about to welcome one at home. Every lesson can be read aloud by the browser, so younger children can enjoy them with a grown-up while older ones work through them on their own.

Is it free?

Yes. Membership of A Lot'l Axolotls is free, and every lesson, quiz, exam and certificate is included. There is nothing to buy.

Does my child need their own account?

No. Children never have accounts. A parent or guardian signs in and adds the child's first name, age and a learning companion to their own account; the child's progress, exam results and certificates are stored there. Up to six children can share one account.

How do the levels work?

There are three levels: Junior Explorer, Junior Keeper and Junior Expert. Each has six lessons, each with a quiz and a job to try with a grown-up, and ends with a level exam of ten questions (one try per question, pass at seven). Passing the exam unlocks the next level. Anyone can read every lesson at any time.

What will my child learn?

Level 1: what an axolotl is, where it comes from, its super powers, its tank, its food and the gentle rules. Level 2: invisible water chemistry, testing, cleaning day, morphs, spotting trouble and designing a tank. Level 3: why axolotls stay young, regeneration, cool water, cycling a tank, saving wild axolotls and expert keeper habits.

How do the certificates and points work?

Each completed level earns a printable certificate with the child's name, the level (1, 2 or 3 of 3), the date and a certificate number, and 1,000 rewards points ($2) for the parent's account, once per child per level.

What kinds of questions are there?

Multiple choice, true or false, fill the gap, pick the picture, matching pairs, sorting cards into boxes, putting steps in order, a temperature slider, and games such as spot-the-mistake, jigsaw and memory pairs. Wrong answers get encouragement and another go; only the exams are one try per question.

What is a learning companion?

One of thirteen illustrated axolotl characters the child chooses when their profile is created. The companion appears on their profile, reacts during lessons, quizzes and exams, and is named on the certificates. The child's own name stays on everything.

Can we read the lessons without signing in?

Yes. Anyone can read every lesson and the grown-up task. Signing in unlocks the quizzes, the exams, the learning companion, progress tracking and the certificates.
